Atmospheric vacuum breakers, which is shown below are no longer allowed on irrigation systems. These devices cannot be tested. Pressure Vacuum breakers or Reduced pressure zone are required on irrigation and or domestic water systems on residential or commercial locations. If you have a swimming pool and you have a direct fill line that is connected to the swimming pool, you need to have a reduced pressure vacuum breaker or double check installed on the make up line.

The purpose of backflow preventers on potable water systems is to protect any contaminated water getting back into the drinking water that is supplied by the city water department. Irrigation systems are labeled high hazard systems due to the fertilizers, pesticides, bird and pet droppings that seep into the sprinkler heads when not in use. Irrigation systems that are turned off for period of time allows the water in the pipe to become stagnant and contaminated. Backflow preventers prevent this contaminated water from getting into your drinking water.
